Antipodes (Singular: antipode)

Two points on opposite sides of the earth; two diametrically opposed positions or views(地球で正反対の二地点、二つの対比的な意見)

→“The adventurer circumnavigated the antipodes.”

→“After my speech was done, the next speaker presented an antipode of what I had argued for.”

Body

An organization or group for a particular objective(特定の目的の為に存在する機構や団体)

→“This government body is officially authorized to issue licenses to new businesses.”

→“The financial restructuring body mapped out its plan for the struggling economy.”

Clumsy (Noun: clumsiness)

Careless and uncoordinated(不注意で調整の取れていない)

→“I picked up the slippers on display but tossed them away as clumsy.”

→“A clumsy teenager stepped on my shoe in the train.”

→“The online seller apologized to me for his clumsiness in sending me a defective good.”

Dystopian

Hypothetically troubled and ill-fated; anti-utopian(想像上険悪な、ユートピアと逆の)

→“The townspeople are facing a dystopian future.”

Flourish

To succeed well; to thrive(うまく成功する、繁栄する)

→“In pre-war Europe, ethnic culture was flourishing.”

→“Venture capitalists are flourishing in today’s economic environment.”

Gain on

To gradually get closer to the one you are chasing(徐々に追いついて接近する)

→“Go faster. The other cars are gaining on us!”

→“The presidential candidate is gaining on his rival, the front runner.”

Helm

A position of power to guide and lead(指導する権威を持った立場、リーダーシップ)

→“When the CEO retired, his son took the helm.”

→“The president vowed to stay at the helm until the next election.”

On the lam

Hiding or escaping from someone, especially law enforcement agencies(警察などから隠れている又は逃げている)

→“The suspect was on the lam for 10 years.”

→“The escapee from prison repeatedly dialed home while on the lam.”

Push

Reinforcement or encouragement; a great effort to attain some objective(補強・支持、目的を達成する為の甚大な努力)

→“When I started pondering the idea of changing jobs, I received a timely push from my best friend.”

Resonate

To make a deep, lasting sound; to seem good or significant(深く長い音を発する、良さや意義などが長期にわたって感じられる)

→“The sound of outdoor concert resonated throughout the park.”

→“World World I still resonates. After all, the modern world was born as a result of it.”

Scam

Fraud(詐欺)

→“My brother got arrested for an identity theft scam.”

→“The ‘ore-ore’ phone scam was up 34% 2011.”

Toss

Toss in: To add(付け加える)

→“In chapter 3, the story gets even more entertaining as the author tosses in a new character to the plot.”

Toss out: To delete(削除する)

→“The authorities tossed out all the charges against him.”

Unctuous

Over-friendly in an insincere way; falsely earnest in praise(不誠実に親しみ深い、調子のいい、お世辞たらたらの)

→“His tone became more unctuous in its apparent friendliness.”

→“I can’t stand that politician’s unctuous attitude.”
